The latest press release from Guildford’s Liberal Democrat MP, declaring her support for cutting police bureaucracy and tackling anti-social behaviour (Surrey Advertiser, 26 November 2004), would be more convincing if her party practiced what they preached.
By April, any police officer stopping someone in the street – not to search them but just to stop them – must fill out a form. The Police Federation estimate this could typically take seven minutes to fill in. But rather than cutting police red-tape, Liberal Democrats have actively supported this excessive, politically correct paperwork.
At the same time, Liberal Democrats have been dogmatically opposed to the introduction of new dispersal orders to break up yobs and disorderly gangs at night. Yet such powers are now being used by Surrey Police and Guildford Borough Council to tackle the minority of youths who intimidate and harass local residents.
It seems we should take our current MP’s press releases with a pinch of salt. Combined with her well-known support for weakening the laws on drugs and letting first-time burglars escape jail, I fear we can have little confidence in her to stand up for the Guildford residents whose lives are blighted by crime and anti-social behaviour.
