Graham Ellwood and Mark Brett-Warburton, County Councillors for Guildford East (Merrow and Burpham) and Guildford South East respectively, have been successfully active on two counts and on behalf of Guildford Residents recently.
Fulfilling their election pledge to improve the roads, they fought via their active membership of both the County’s Transport Select Committee and special sub-committee to have the existing maintenance contract put out to tender.
Furthermore, and in the face of opposition from those who favoured continuing with the existing contractors, Ringway and Carillion, albeit as a joint venture, they persuaded the ruling Cabinet to recommend a re-tender of the current contract over the next two years.
Also, Mark and Graham called in the Cabinet’s decision to scrap the Pegasus bus pilot with effect from July 2010. Cabinet subsequently and unfortunately reaffirmed their earlier decision, but Mark and Graham did gain an assurance from Ian Lake, Cabinet member for Transport, that he would work with the schools affected to minimise the disruption, as will Mark and Graham with the respective Head Teachers.
Their next challenge will be the Waste Review Plan as they are both members of the Environment Select Committee. Graham says: "Guildford’s interests will always be at the heart of our thinking".
