Councillor Sheridan Westlake

Borough Councillor for Merrow

Sheridan was elected as a councillor for Merrow in 2003, and re-elected with an increased majority in 2007. He is the Vice-Chairman of the Licensing Committee and also serves on the Community Development Scrutiny Committee.

As a local councillor, he has been instrumental in pushing through a ‘no casino’ policy across the Borough; campaigned for the retention of a town centre shuttle bus; sought to protect the character of Merrow from over-development; and worked with Bushy Hill residents to ensure they get a fairer deal – too often their interests are over-looked. He is very concerned about the Labour Government's plans to remove Green Belt protection in Merrow and Burpham and dump an unsustainable 'urban extension' on its fringes, increasing congestion and urban sprawl.

Sheridan went to school at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford and has undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from Oxford University. He works as the Deputy Director of Research for the Conservative Party, advising David Cameron and the Shadow Cabinet on several key policy areas, including local government and the environment.

She taught Geography at George Abbot School for over thirty years. She has run a Guide Company for over forty years. Jennifer is actively involved in church work, and regularly attends St. John's and Merrow Methodist churches. She is a member of Merrow W.I., U3A and Soroptimists.

She was first elected to the Borough Council in 1987, and currently serves on the Community Development & Health Scrutiny Committee and the Licensing Committee. She was re-elected with an increased majority in May 2007, and served as the Mayor of Guildford for 2008-09.

Councillor David Carpenter

Borough Councillor for Merrow

David has lived on the Epsom Road in Merrow for over 30 years. A well-known resident of Merrow, he is currently a school governor at George Abbot and previously at Bushy Hill School for many years. He was elected as a Borough Councillor in May 2007.

His wife Janet shares his commitment to helping the local community and is a governor at Thorn Chase School, the under-threat special needs school in Merrow.

David can often be seen running in Merrow and has completed three London Marathons for charity.  David is also Treasurer of the Friends of Guildford Cathedral.

David knows what it is to work your way up from the bottom - having left school at 14 and studied in his spare time for both a university degree and accountancy qualification.

Councillor Graham Ellwood

County councillor for Merrow and Burpham

Graham has lived in Merrow for nine years, and runs his own local firm as an independent financial and mortgage adviser. He is a local committee member of the Federation of Small Businesses. His wife Hilary is a teacher at George Abbot School, and he is a regular contributor to the Surrey Advertiser. He was elected as a county councillor in June 2009.

He is committed to improving the value for money that residents in Merrow and Burpham obtain for the council tax they pay. In particular, he will fight to ensure a bigger and fairer share of Central Government funding is rebated to our County. Surrey residents currently receive back less than 5% of the £700 million taxes that we pay to the Government!

Graham will fight to ensure Surrey taxpayers’ money is spent in the most cost effective and efficient manner possible. This may include recommending bringing some council services, such as Highway maintenance, back under County Council Control if greater efficiency and cost effectiveness can be guaranteed. He feels very strongly that the present dreadful state of the County’s roads is in no small part due to the manner in which they are maintained as well as the lack of funding from government.

Further, and as a passionate believer in the importance of child welfare, he will strive to improve the quality levels of social care provided by the County Council in particular to the less able. Those who look after the care needs of all age groups deserve the best support.

As a great supporter of the quality of local education, Graham will ensure that the County’s needs are a top priority as we have so many schools of which we are justifiably proud. However, where school traffic is a problem, as it is in some cases, Graham will work to ensure a better balance between the needs of parents and those residents who live close by.

Although Surrey is a relatively safe county in which to live Graham is dismayed at the prospect of cuts in vital services, such as the police force, caused by the present government’s unfair rebate system which punishes Surrey residents. He will press hard, as is Anne Milton our MP, for Surrey to receive a fairer share of the government tax cake to avoid cuts in vital services.

Graham is utterly opposed to any suggestion of an incinerator in Guildford as well as being keen to ensure the landfill sites, such as Newlands Corner, are properly and safely managed. Finally, Graham is totally committed both to the future of the Royal Surrey Hospital and the need to fight tooth and nail against the South East Plan.
